U.S. Census Data Shows New Homes are Getting Bigger

If you’ve been active in your new home hunt, you’ve probably noticed one similar trend about the homes and communities you’ve been checking out: homes are getting bigger.

Well, you’re not just seeing things. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the size of single-family homes has been rising for decades. In fact, the median size of a single-family home completed in in the United States in 2015 was 2,467 sq. ft., up 14 sq. ft. from the previous year and up 240 sq. ft from 2005.

“Brexit” – The British exit from the economic and political union with Europe after a quarter century came as a great surprise, shaking financial markets and lowering the outlook for economic growth in the U.S.

“Buying, selling and lending just got riskier, all because the market is more turbulent and less predictable,” Redfin chief economist Nela Richardson said. “It takes a certain amount of confidence to buy a huge asset like a house and markets just lost their confidence.”

Disappointing job growth in May combined with other economic factors seem to have caused the Fed to reconsider a June rate hike.

The Federal Reserve's April meeting minutes suggested that a strengthening economy could bring about the decision to raise interest rates at the June meeting. However, disappointing job growth in May combined with other global and domestic factors seem to have caused the Fed to reconsider.

New U.S. single-family home sales surged to a more than eight-year high in April and prices hit a record high, offering further evidence of a pick-up in economic growth early in the second quarter.

The Commerce Department said on Tuesday new home sales jumped 16.6 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 619,000 units, the highest level since January 2008. The percent increase was the largest since January 1992.
